Polymer Coating Heals Itself

Biswajit Ghosh and Marek W. Urban of the University of Southern Mississippi have come up with another approach, which they describe in a paper in Science. With their method, what breaks is not a sphere, but a ring-shaped chemical, oxetane, that is incorporated in the polyurethane polymer. Another compound in the polymer, chitosan, forms cross-links at the places where the oxetane breaks, healing the scratch.

The team demonstrated that a hairline crack - around 10 micrometres in thickness - could be completely knitted back together under bright UV light in around 30 minutes. However, they have not yet investigated more complex damage or deeper scratches.

Scientists believe they have uncovered a key reason why flu viruses tend to strike in cold weather.

Flu's protective coat must melt to infect a cell

They found the viruses coat themselves in fatty material that hardens to a gel, protecting them in the cold.

This coating melts in the higher temperatures of the respiratory tract, allowing the virus to infect cells.

The research gives scientists a new target to prevent the spread of viruses. One idea is a special chemical that would dissolve the lipid shell. This could be added to detergents and hand soap. Staying indoors where it is warm may also help prevent the spread of viruses.

ScienceDaily (Feb. 14, 2008) — Wool skirts and silk ties may avoid those pricey trips to the dry-cleaner in the future and clean themselves, researchers in Australia and China suggest. They report development of a nanoparticle coating that could lead to "self-cleaning" wool and silk fabrics.
