AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Netherlands is to relax its ban on the Segway motorized scooter, a two-wheeled, gyroscopically-balanced machine of which U.S. President George W. Bush is a fan.

"The general use of the Segway will be allowed on bicycle paths and roads under the condition that a maximum speed of 25 km per hour will be kept to," the Dutch government said in a statement.

(AP Photo/ Bas Czerwinski) :: A model of a lattice work of flexible plastic pipes, held firmly in place by a plastic grid, covered over by asphalt, which magnifies the sun's thermal power, is shown at Ooms Avenhorn Holding BV in Scharwoude, northern Netherlands, Friday, Dec. 14, 2007. The pipe-work by Dutch civil engineering firm Ooms, is claimed to be capable of siphoning the warmth from roads and parking lots to heat homes and offices.

Netherlands Adopts Open-Source Software

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) — The Dutch government has set a soft deadline of April 2008 for its agencies to start using open-source software — freely distributed programs that anyone can modify — the Netherlands Economic Affairs Ministry said Thursday.

Government organizations will still be able to use proprietary software and formats but will have to justify it under the new policy, ministry spokesman Edwin van Scherrenburg said.

Van Scherrenburg said the plan was approved unanimously at a meeting of two parliamentary commissions on Wednesday.

Who is Sinterklaas (2)

Sinterklaas

The Feast of Sinterklaas, or St. Nicholas, is an annual event which has been uniquely Dutch and Flemish for centuries. St. Nicholas' Feast Day, December 6th, is observed in most Roman Catholic countries primarily as a feast for small children. But it is only in the Low Countries - especially in the Netherlands - that the eve of his feast day (December 5th) is celebrated nationwide by young and old, christian and non-christian, and without any religious overtones.
