Underwater 'flying machine' launched

Unlike other submersibles, Mr Hawkes said his deep sea craft can actually "fly underwater".

"Normal submersibles have ballast systems and are nothing more than sinkers. They just treat the ocean as a vertical elevator and they typically work on the bottom on a small footprint.

Robotic Fish To Fight Pollution In Sea

Scientists have designed a robotic fish capable of detecting pollution in water.

Robotic fish: the latest weapon in the fight against water pollution


The life-like creatures, which will mimic the undulating movement of real fish, will be equipped with tiny chemical sensors to find the source of potentially hazardous pollutants in the water, such as leaks from vessels in the port or underwater pipelines.

Thanks to Wi-Fi technology, they will then be able to transmit the information to the port's control centre via a "charging hub" where the fish can charge their batteries. This will enable the authorities to map in real time the source and scale of the pollution (see attached graphic).

Solar Islands

Giant discs covered in solar panels and launched at sea to capture the sun's rays and create electricity and hydrogen could be visible on the coastline of the United Arab Emirates in a number of years. The concept is being developed by the Swiss Centre for Electronics and Microtechnology, Inc (CSEM).

CSEM is developing a new concept for the large-scale transformation of solar energy into hydrogen and electricity at very low cost. The plan is to build large “Solar Islands” floating in the sea. These giant floating islands will be fitted with solar thermal panels which will convert solar energy into electricity and/or hydrogen.

CSEM started a project to design and built a first prototype of such a solar island. The aim of the project is to validate the concept and prepare the construction of large islands. The prototype will be built and tested in the desert of the United Arab Emirates. The project is funded by 5 mio US$ by the Gouvernment of the emirate Ras al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Patented Technology

The circular Solar Islands with a diameter of 5 kilometers and an height of 20 meters consists of a torus, which is the steam storage, carrying the termosolar panels placed on a membrane.

Electric pumps constitute an overpressure of 0.1 bar to sustain the membrane 20 metres above the water level.



The whole platform adjusts it´s position to the course of the sun, to assure a maximum yield rate. To enable the platform to move, electric hydrodynamic motors will be fixed every 10 meters along the circumference.

More than 40% of shark and ray species in the Mediterranean are threatened with extinction, according to a new report from the World Conservation Union (IUCN).

Malaga, Spain, 16 November, 2007 (IUCN) – The first complete IUCN Red List assessment of the status of all Mediterranean sharks and rays has revealed that 42% of the species are threatened with extinction. Overfishing, including bycatch (non-target species caught incidentally), is the main cause of decline, according to the research.

“From devil rays to angel sharks, Mediterranean populations of these vulnerable species are in serious trouble,” said Claudine Gibson, Programme Officer for the IUCN Shark Specialist Group and co-author of the report. “Our analyses reveal the Mediterranean Sea as one of the world’s most dangerous places on Earth for sharks and rays. Bottom dwelling species appear to be at greatest risk in this region, due mainly to intense fishing of the seabed.”
