The Sandman an Electric Vehicle backed by Human Propulsion

Meet the Sandman. It's the official name of this four-wheeler, which is unlike any Holden panel-van we've ever known.

According to its designer, 20 year-old Slovakian Adam Danko, the single-occupancy vehicle was designed for young, active, environmentally-conscious people.

The Sandman's design recently won Europe's Allivision09 competition, a contest that focused on "Ideas for a Better World" and attracted about 650 entries.

The Sandman is a type of transportation vehicle targeted to young and active people, who like sports and need an affordable and practical car. It is powered by a combination of human propulsion and an electric engine, which helps to pedal along.

"The winning project best met all criteria of the competition. It’s about clean design, which is very sovereign in its expression," commented Václav Capouch, Škoda Auto designer and one of the jury members of the Allivision09 competition.


One of the finer points about the Sandman is that it is both a city vehicle and an off-road alternative with all-terrain suspension fitted to both the front and rear.

A pair of joystick-style levers alongside the seat steer the Sandman's mountain-bike (or perhaps tractor) inspired tyres through the terrain.

For safety reasons the seat is adaptable and it comes with a seatbelt to keep you strapped in whether you're going over moguls or speed humps. The cockpit also houses an LCD readout screen.

Valtra ANTS Tractor Concept

ANTS – Future Tractor-Trailer Design Concept | Green Big Truck


Designers at the Finnish tractor company Valtra have come up with their vision of the future of agricultural machinery with the ANTS machine.  This is a modular concept vehicle that can do everything from the field to delivery.  The concept was featured in Wired Magazine at Valtra’s unveiling on the company’s 60th anniversary.


The ANTS concept is named after the Valtra’s current lineup of models: the A, N, T, and S series.  The concept is a versatile, lightweight system of modular tractor-trailer pieces that can be added or subtracted according to task need.

ANTS is a modular solution. It comprises two basic modules: The soldier, with a power of some 100 kW, and the worker, with a power of 200 kW. Both can act together or work individually. For supervisory tasks there is a cab that can be fitted onto both machines. When executing heavy work requiring the participation of an operator, the modules can be interlocked i.e. the rear wheels are adjusted to a narrow track while the front wheels of the other machine are moved abreast and the machines interlocked. In this mode a queen becomes available, with articulated steering and maximum power of 400 kW.

The cab is a capsule that can be attached to both basic modules. It can rotate and may be placed at the front, rear or on top of the basic module. The cab may be lowered for safe access; most tractor related accidents occur when getting in and out of the cab.

The YikeBike mini-farthing is a type of folding bicycle released on 2 September 2009 at EUROBIKE. It weighs 9.8 kilograms (22 lb) and when folded, it is small enough to fit in a backpack. The YikeBike was invented by Grant Ryan and designed by a team in New Zealand over 5 years. It is the smallest and lightest electric folding bicycle in the world.[1]

DTV Shredder -- A Segway Tank

BPG Werks unveils Shredder will beat up your Segway - SlashGear


A company called BPG Werks has unveiled a cool new treaded vehicle that is a cross between a tank and a skateboard aimed at getting soldiers around quickly on just about any terrain. The vehicle is called the Shredder and it looks like the macho version of a Segway.


The thing is powered by a Honda 4-stroke 200cc engine with 15hp. The vehicle weighs 125 pounds and has a suspension with 3-inches of travel. The torque produced by the little 200cc motor is 16ft/lb. The shredder can carry 1200 pounds of payload when unmanned and 700 pounds when manned. The top speed for the Shredder is over 30 mph.

MIT's Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV)

A team of students from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence lead by Prof. Nick Roy developed an autonomous Micro Aerial Vehicle capable of autonomously mapping and navigating a complex environment.
The team participated in and won the AUVSI International Aerial Robotics Competition (IARC) which was held on the campus of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM.)
