Standing Strong: 2009 NEESWood Capstone Test

The final experiment of NSF's multi-year NEESWood project, the effort tested new ways to construct buildings that can withstand severe forces of nature.

After repairs, on July 14th, the six-story wood-frame structure became the subject of the largest shake table test the world has seen to date: six stories, all-wood construction, shaken to motions from the 1994 Northridge earthquake, amplified to a level that equates to an event that occurs, on average, once every 2,500 years.

Japanese robot scientist unveils 2-metre long robot "Hajime 33"

A Japanese scientist in Osaka has unveiled a giant robot that can perform a number of human-like functions, including walking, bowing and playing soccer.

Battery operated "Hajime 33" stands 2-meters tall, weighs just 20 kilograms and is just 30 centimeters wide. The humanoid robot even plays soccer with his creator Hajime Sakamoto, as long as his battery life allows. Sakamoto has created several humanoid robots.

Creepy Robot Baby CB2

A child-sized android with flexible joints and soft skin developed by the Japan Science and Technology Agency was unveiled Friday at Osaka University, where the agency’s research and development team is based.

The 1.3-meter-tall, 33 kilogram humanoid robot has optical, auditory and tactile sensors. Fifty-one actuators inside its body run on compressed air and enable the robot to make complex movements smoothly.

The only problem being that unlike the real thing, CB2 is neither comical nor cute – far from it in fact.The not so little fella’s freakishly real – and at the same time not real – features quite possibly putting people off having kids forever.


Although that said, his (or indeed her) loving look up at its ‘father’ is possibly enough to melt even the coldest of hearts.
