Sony's New HMZ-T2 Personal 3D Virtual Reality Viewer

Sony trims the fat on latest Personal 3D Viewer headset



Along with its 84-inch 4K TV, Sony also chose IFA 2012 to unveil the latest version of its head-mounted Personal 3D Viewer. The successor to the HMZ-T1 we tried out at IFA last year, Sony claims the updated HMZ-T2 model boasts a sharper display, improved sound and is some 20 percent lighter, making it easier on the ol’ neck muscles.

The biggest strength of the original model was its 3D image, which because of its true stereoscopic 3D effect delivered by separate OLED displays for each eye meant a pristine, cross-talk free, 3D image. Eye fatigue is also further reduced with the introduction of an auto-color temperature adjustment that gradually lowers the image tone intensity from blue to red. Other technical improvements achieved include a 24p True Cinema mode for viewing films at the speed as they are displayed in movie theaters.

RayModeler Sony's 360-Degree Autostereoscopic 3D Display



The RayModeler 3D display you’re seeing in this video is a prototype of the kind of device sci-fi storytellers have been dreaming up for years. LED light sources allow you to see an image from all angles, 360 degrees. Objects like faces and people appear realistic giving viewers a sense of depth because the left and right eyes are seeing different images.



Sony Introduces 360-Degree Autostereoscopic Display



At  Siggraph 2010 in Los Angeles, Sony showcased the prototype of its 360-degree Autostereoscopic Display. Autostereoscopic technology is considered to be the future of 3D, and does not require special 3D glasses. The device, known as the Ray Modeler, is cylindrical in shape and features LED light sources to enable viewing of full color volumetric objects from all directions. It also allows users to control the display’s orientation with hand gestures.

According to Sony, the system is the first display of its kind, featuring special LED light sources that show 360 unique, 24-bit color images in all directions. The user can even control the orientation of the display's content by using hand motions in proximity to the display (see video above).

Though the prototype seems far from being integrated into our everyday lives, Sony says that future iterations of their RayModeler will have many potential applications such as video entertainment, digital signage, education, museum displays, video games, advertising, and 3D telecommunication.

Sony's Rollable OLED Display




Sony unveils super-thin OLED screen that can be rolled around a pencil

Sony has developed was it calls 'the world's first' flexible colour video screen, that is so sheer it can be rolled around a pencil.

The Japanese electronics giant created the 4.1" across prototype using an ultra-thin flexible material covered in organic semiconductors.

The ultra-thin screen continues to show a clear picture even when it is rolled

The display is just 80μm thick, offers 432 x 240 resolution (121 ppi), a contrast ratio of around 1,000:1, and produces 100 cd/m2 brightness. Sony says the OLED can be wrapped around a pencil with just a 4mm radius. And the OLED can actually continue to display images and video while being rolled up, which is (according to Sony) a world’s first.

Sony OLED TV Showcased

Sony was one of the exhibitors at Display Expo held in Japan just last week and of course they showcased their OLED TVs. One of them was a prototype 21 inch OLED panel with 1366 by 768 resolution. The contrast ratio is the same as my XEL-1 which is 1000000 to 1. The design has dramatically changed and looks futuristic in a way with the stand fully integrated.

SonyDrive XEL-1 OLED TVIn October 2007,Sony introduced the world's first OLED TV - the XEL-1. This first model is a highly priced (~2,500$), small sized (11") Television - more of a commercial-prototype than anything else, Sony only makes around a thousand units a month.

Sony's 27" OLED - the XEL-2?

Sony 27 OLED prototype at CES 2008 Sony announced in May 2008 that they are working on a new TV. This one will be a 27" model - which is large enough to be called a television indeed. Sony even showed us a prototype of that screen (picture on the left).

Sony's 21" OLED prototypes

In April 2009, Sony displayed a new 21" OLED TV prototype. These TVs have a 1366x768 resolution, 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and they are only 1.4mm thick. Will this be the XEL-2 TV?

Organic light-emitting diode

An organic light emitting diode (OLED), also light emitting polymer (LEP) and organic electro luminescence (OEL), is any light emitting diode (LED) whose emissive electroluminescent layer is composed of a film of organic compounds. The layer usually contains a polymer substance that allows suitable organic compounds to be deposited. They are deposited in rows and columns onto a flat carrier by a simple "printing" process. The resulting matrix of pixels can emit light of different colors.

Such systems can be used in television screens, computer displays, small, portable system screens such as cell phones and PDAs, advertising, information and indication. OLEDs can also be used in light sources for general space illumination, and large-area light-emitting elements. OLEDs typically emit less light per area than inorganic solid-state based LEDs which are usually designed for use as point-light sources.

A significant benefit of OLED displays over traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) is that OLEDs do not require a backlight to function. Thus they draw far less power and, when powered from a battery, can operate longer on the same charge. Because there is no need for a backlight, an OLED display can be much thinner than an LCD panel. Degradation of OLED materials has limited their use so far.[1]
