Based on the work of Behrokh Koshnevis at the University of Southern California, Rapid Automated Manufacturing (also known as Contour Crafting) is capable of building a 1000 ft² home in approximately one day. Advances in robotics and materials science suggest that future developments in this technology will include interior surfaces and furnishings.

Contour Crafting is a construction process under development by Behrokh Khoshnevis of the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute (in the Viterbi School of Engineering) that uses a computer-controlled crane or gantry to build edifices rapidly and efficiently without manual labor. It was originally conceived as a method to construct molds for industrial parts. Khoshnevis decided to adapt the technology for rapid home construction as a way to rebuild after natural disasters, like the devastating earthquakes that have plagued his native Iran.[1]

Swiss Company Offers Paper Homes

A Swiss company known as The Wall AG, has created a $5,000, 390 square foot modular home.

This house is marketed towards third-world towns, for long-term refugees. The Universal World House can be transported and used almost anywhere. It is light, easily assembled, environmentally friendly, earthquake-proof and extremely cheap.

The Universal World House is crafted out of a resin-soaked cellulose, made from recycled paper, shaped into honeycomb walls, which provide structural integrity and insulation for the home. It also comes outfitted for plumbing and boarding facilities of up to 8 residents.

The home's inventor, Gerd Niemoeller, says that the paper house weighs just 1,763lb, which is lighter than a VW Golf. “Without the foundation block, the whole house actually weighs in at about 400kg,” says the design engineer. However, despite it being light, the house will not simply blow away.

SwissCell walls are based on hexagonal structures similar to honeycombs: the technique results in lightweight but strong boards, typical used in the vehicle and aircraft industry. Usually honeycomb boards are made of aluminum – an expensive and energy intensive material. SwissCell, by contrast, is a cellulose product, impregnated by synthetic resin.

House Building Robot to be a reality soon

A new automated construction system is all set to change the face of home-building, for it is soon going to step out of the developmental phase and become a functional house-building robot. This prototype was developed by Behrokh Khoshnevis of the University of Southern California. A computer-controlled crane or gantry will build houses efficiently without any manual labor. It will use a quick-setting concrete-like material and will build up structures in a layer-by-layer fashion.

Contour Crafting (CC) is a layered fabrication technology developed by Dr. Behrokh Khoshnevis of the University of Southern California. Contour Crafting technology has great potential for automating the construction of whole structures as well as sub-components. Using this process, a single house or a colony of houses, each with possibly a different design, may be automatically constructed in a single run, embedded in each house all the conduits for electrical, plumbing and air-conditioning.
 

The potential applications of this technology are far reaching including but not limited to applications in emergency, low-income, and commercial housing.

Next Generation House, designed by Sou Fujimoto Architects, is a 4 x 4 meter cube of solid Japanese cedar blocks assembled like a jigsaw puzzle to create spaces for sitting and lounging.

The next generation house, designed by Sou Fujimoto Architects, is a small housing module for weekend use located on the edge of a forest overlooking the River Kuma at Kumakura, Japan.

Heavy yet light

Next Generation House is a small housing module for weekend use, located on the edge of a forest overlooking the River Kuma at Kumakura, opposite the temple of Shibatatehime. The client is a timber merchant.



The small pavilion, a 4x4 m cube, is made by assembling solid Japanese cedar blocks kept in place by their own weight and connecting metal cables running through vertical drill holes.



Some of the inside cubes are laid off-centre to create shelves, small living areas and even steps to move from one level to another.



Offsets in the wall cubes also create windows with views of the surrounding countryside. The oblique glass windowpanes are held in place with plastic plugs. The mobile sheets are in transparent acrylic.



Two roof skylights provide extra natural light – an architectural feature over which Fujimoto takes special care. At night, artificial light visible from the outside helps to dematerialise the cube by mixing the warm tones of wood with the amber glow of incandescent bulbs, emphasising the ways in which a structure made up of heavy wooden elements can seem so light and airy.
