Cambridge Emotional Computer: Mind Reading GPS System



The 'emotionally sensitive' satnav: Cambridge scientist develops device that reacts to driver's moods


Professor Peter Robinson has created a satnav that recognises facial expressions and voice tone and can react based on the situation. The prototype feeds this data into software attached to a robotic human head that sits next to the driver

His device uses sensors to detect facial expressions, such as frowns, and voice recognition software to pick up rising irritation in the tone of a driver’s voice.

When it detects a driver’s anger, it responds with sympathetic expressions.

When people talk to each other, they express their feelings through facial expressions, tone of voice and body postures. They even do this when they are interacting with machines. These hidden signals are an important part of human communication, but computers ignore them.

Professor Peter Robinson is leading a team in the Computer Laboratory at the University of Cambridge who are exploring the role of emotions in human-computer interaction. His research is examined in the film The Emotional Computer, released on the University's YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/cambridgeuniversity).

More Human, Less Machine
Would it help if the GPS system looked a little more like a person than a box? Robinson thinks people would respond to the machine better if it did look more human-like. The professor designed the almost-human-like robot named Charles.

Charles has motors in his face and cameras in his eyes. While he might be more friendly than a standard GPS system, he also looks a bit more creepy.

The Cambridge professor thinks differently: “The way that Charles and I can communicate shows us the future of how people are going to interact with machines.”

Robinson turns to Charles in the car. “Hey Charles, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship,” he said.

A Microsoft Research project dubbed "Mobile Surface" links a mobile phone to a camera and projector, letting people interact with a screen projected onto a tabletop by moving their hands in the air above it.

It's named after the company's Surface tabletop computer, and while the portable version doesn't provide nearly the screen resolution of its much larger cousin, Mobile Surface is notable in that it allows for three-dimensional control by sensing not lateral movement but also the distance between the hands and the surface.

The project is an implementation wherein Microsoft plans to allow you to use any tabletop surface as an interacting device with the help of a mobile projector and camera setup. The demo shows:
  • A camera, projector and mobile phone, a projection of the mobile phone display is made on a tabletop, where a user interacts.
  • Ability to increase or decrease volume by moving your hand in the air.
  • Playing a drum set by moving hands in the air or hitting the projection of the drum set on a table.

Mobile Surface

It is a novel interaction system for mobile computing. Our goal is to bring Microsoft Surface experience to mobile scenarios, and more importantly, to enable 3D interaction with mobile devices. We do research on how to transform any surface (e.g., a coffee table or a piece of paper) to Mobile Surface with a mobile device and a camera-projector system. Besides this, our work also includes how to get 3D object model in real-time, augmented reality and multiple-layer 3D information presentation.

The prototype Mobile Surface device combines the features of Microsoft's Surface touchscreen computer along with the gesture-based interface of its coming Project Natal game control system for the Xbox 360.

UK-based company Light Blue Optics (LBO) has unveiled a revolutionary compact projector that lets users interact with images that are projected onto any flat surface.

Turn Flat Surfaces Into A Touch Screen

Light Touch has Holographic Laser Projection (HLP) technology inside that creates video images in WVGA resolution. Integrated infrared sensors detect motion and turn the projected image into a 10.1-inch virtual touch screen, so the user can control the projector and interact with applications simply by touching the image.

Haptic perception

Haptic perception is the process of recognizing objects through touch. It involves a combination of somatosensory perception of patterns on the skin surface (e.g., edges, curvature, and texture) and proprioception of hand position and conformation.

Our daily lives are more and more computerized with advance in networking and computers.
It is increasing importance such as interfaces, sensors and robotics. These technologies connects the information-world and the real-world.

This demonstration focuses on two haptic experiences: sensing the composition and stiffness of an object, and estimating dynamics for multiple objects. Slight vibrations express the differences between materials and degrees of stiffness.

Haptic Ring Touching Virtual Creatures in Mixed Reality Environment
We propose a new method for Symmetrical Haptic Interaction System with Virtual Creatures (VCs) in Mixed Reality (MR). In this work, we can interact VCs directly, not only through some tools but also with our fingers. If we touch VCs, we can see and feel their reaction.

The developers of the ring actually debuted it a little earlier in the year with a poster at SIGGRAPH. Virtual Creatures which interact with the device can be moved by the users pushes and respond to the type of contact. With light petting, the VC will display happy emotions. A strong push will cause the VC to avoid or react negatively to the user. This complex behavior for the VC gives an added layer of realism to the augmented reality interaction. After all, what use is having a finger that can manipulate a virtual world if the virtual world doesn’t react appropriately.

The Future of Video Game Input: Muscle Sensors


Electromyography (EMG) sensors can decode muscle signals from the skin's surface as a person performs certain gestures. Researchers attached such sensors to their forearms, and built a gesture recognition library by monitoring muscle signals related to each gesture. The project emerged as a collaborative effort between Microsoft, University of Washington in Seattle, and the University of Toronto in Canada.

Muscle-Bound Computer Interface

Forearm electrodes could enable new forms of hands-free computer interaction.

The new muscle-sensing project is "going after healthy consumers who want richer input modalities," says Desney Tan, a researcher at Microsoft. As a result, he and his colleagues had to come up with a system that was inexpensive and unobtrusive and that reliably sensed a range of gestures.

Muscle-computer interfaces directly sense and decode human muscular activity rather than relying
on physical actuation or perceptible user actions. Using a wireless EMG armband, we have shown
relatively high accuracies decoding simple finger gestures both when the arm is rested on a surface,
but also when the gestures are performed in free space.
