IBM's Watson to Help Treat Cancer : Discovery News



IBM's Watson computer -- the one that beat the best human players at Jeopardy! -- will now help doctors at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center diagnose cancer.

The initiative will combine the computational power of IBM Watson and its natural language processing ability with MSKCC’s clinical knowledge, existing molecular and genomic data and vast repository of cancer case histories, in order to create an outcome and evidence-based decision support system. The goal is to give oncologists located anywhere the ability to obtain detailed diagnostic and treatment options based on updated research that will help them decide how best to care for an individual patient.


MSKCC’s world-renowned oncologists will assist in developing IBM Watson to use a patient’s medical information and synthesize a vast array of continuously updated and vetted treatment guidelines, published research and insights gleaned from the deep experience of MSKCC clinicians to provide an individualized recommendation to physicians. The tool will also provide users with a detailed record of the data and evidence used to reach the recommendations.

“This comprehensive, evidence-based approach will profoundly enhance cancer care by accelerating the dissemination of practice-changing research at an unprecedented pace,” said Dr. Mark G. Kris, Chief, Thoracic Oncology Service at MSKCC and one of the clinicians leading the development effort. He noted that 85% of patients with cancer are not treated at specialized medical centers and it can take years for the latest developments in oncology to reach all practice settings.

Development work is already underway for the first applications, which include lung, breast and prostate cancers. The objective is to begin piloting the solutions to a select group of oncologists in late 2012, with wider distribution planned for late 2013. This collaboration complements an earlier announcement by IBM and WellPoint that the parties will focus on putting Watson to work on oncology solutions.

  • By using a supercomputer to analyze news stories, a University of Illinois researcher believes that he can predict major upcoming global events, according to various news and wire reports.
  • Writing in the journal First Monday on September 5, Kalev Leetaru, the Assistant Director for Text and Digital Media Analytics at the school’s Institute for Computing in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Science, writes, “Pooling together the global tone of all news mentions of a country over time appears to accurately forecast its near–term stability, including predicting the revolutions in Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya, conflict in Serbia, and the stability of Saudi Arabia.”

Mood and location
  • Reports were analysed for two main types of information: mood - whether the article represented good news or bad news, and location - where events were happening and the location of other participants in the story.
  • Mood detection, or "automated sentiment mining" searched for words such as "terrible", "horrific" or "nice".
  • Location, or "geocoding" took mentions of specific places, such as "Cairo" and converted them in to coordinates that could be plotted on a map.
  • Analysis of story elements was used to create an interconnected web of 100 trillion relationships.

NVidia has come up with “Tesla personal supercomputer” that delivers cluster computing like performance and is upto 250 times faster than the present day personal computers or workstations.
Tesla is powered by 4 GPU’s, each having 240 processing cores (that makes 4*240=960 cores working in parallel in total) based on the NVidia’s CUDA architecture, delivering whopping performance of near 4 Teraflops!

The Tesla Personal Supercomputer is a desktop computer that is backed by Nvidia and built by Dell, Lenovo and other companies[1]. It is meant to be a demonstration of the capabilities of Nvidia's Tesla GPGPU brand; it utilizes NVIDIA's CUDAparallel computing architecture and powered by up to 960 parallel processing cores[2], which allows it to achieve a performance up to 250 times faster than standard PCs, according to Nvidia. Edinburgh site for super-computer

One of the most advanced super-computers in the UK is to be sited at Edinburgh University.

The £113m machine, Hector (High End Computing Terascale Resources), will be used for solving complex problems by researchers across the country.

It will cover the size of two tennis courts and be capable of 60 million million calculations a second.
