Curved Origami Sculpture

Demaine’s artwork selected for Smithsonian exhibit

"Natural Cycles," part of a series of curved origami structures created by Erik and Martin Demaine.

Curved-Crease Sculpture by Erik and Martin Demaine

Paper folds itself into a natural equilibrium form depending on its creases. These equilibria are poorly understood, especially for curved creases. We are exploring what shapes are possible in this genre of self-folding origami, with applications to deployable structures, manufacturing, and self-assembly. This transformation of flat paper into swirling surfaces creates sculpture that feels alive.

The new materiality of shadows

Picture puzzles were used by artists as early as the middle ages, in order for example to convey a hidden message which is only revealed to the observer from a specific perspective – in other words the observer's position determines the nature of the perception.

Drzach & Suchy's artistic work is based on a further fundamental observation, which is independent of the point of vision of the observer: the shadow which is cast by a physical object is dependent on the intensity and location of the light source and the shape of the object.

The idea of shadow clouds can be summarized as follows: the shadow cast by flat, thin elements depends on their relation to the direction of illumination: elements perpendicular to illumination cast clear shadows, while the shadows of elements parallel to illumination are practically invisible. Moreover, the elements perpendicular to the illumination can be arbitrary shifted along the illumination without changing the overall shadow cast by all the elements. This allows for a random, cloud-like placement of elements in space.

First Aperiodic Tiling With A Single Shape
Mathematicians discover how to tile a plane in a nonrepeating pattern using a single shape.
Today, Joshua Socolar and Joan Taylor at Duke University announce that they have solved the einstein problem and in the process they've discovered an entirely new way to approach the problem.
"The tile presented here is the only known example of an aperiodic tile," they say.

The Real 3D Mandelbulb

It's found by following a relatively simple math formula. But in the end, it's still only 2D and flat - there's no depth, shadows, perspective, or light sourcing. What we have featured in this article is a potential 3D version of the same fractal.
