Action Video Games lead to Faster Decisions

Video games may not be a waste of time after all. A new study finds that playing certain kinds of games actually helps improve quick decision-making skills that can be used in all aspects of life, from driving to keeping track of friends in a crowd.

Cognitive scientists from the University of Rochester report the findings of new research, which show video game players make faster decisions – not just "trigger happy" faster decisions, but accurate decisions.

The researchers tested dozens of 18- to 25-year-olds who were not ordinarily video game players. They split the subjects into two groups. One group played 50 hours of the fast-paced action video games "Call of Duty 2" and "Unreal Tournament," and the other group played 50 hours of the slow-moving strategy game "The Sims 2."

After this training period, all of the subjects were asked to make quick decisions in several tasks designed by the researchers. In the tasks, the participants had to look at a screen, analyze what was going on, and answer a simple question about the action in as little time as possible (i.e. whether a clump of erratically moving dots was migrating right or left across the screen on average). In order to make sure the effect wasn't limited to just visual perception, the participants were also asked to complete an analogous task that was purely auditory.

The action game players were up to 25 percent faster at coming to a conclusion and answered just as many questions correctly as their strategy game playing peers.

Players who played action games like Call of Duty 2 (pictured here) made quicker decisions than those who played slow-paced strategy games like The Sims without sacrificing accuracy.

Golfzilla -- Play Golf in Google Maps

Playing online simulated golf on the world most renown golf courses. This will be possible with Golfzilla, a mashup of Google Map’s Satellite images and a Golf game, developed for the Android powered smartphones which are expected to become available by the end of this year.

Golfzilla is golf game that is currently in development using Android. The game uses Google Maps satellite imagery of various golf courses in different countries. Golfzilla is expected to be available at the end of 2008 and should support a peer to peer competition mode using GTalk.

Crave AsiaGolfzilla isn't that cool, but it lets you play golf on Google Maps with the option to select the country and the course. So instead of fancy 3D graphics, you are actually playing as if you were on the ground, but from a bird's eye view. The final release of Golfzilla is expected to be available at the end of 2008 and will support P2P battle mode using GTalk. That's pretty much in line with the expected launch of Android.

What’s happening here is that each worm is following two rules: 1) try to move in the same direction as nearby worms (commonly known as the cohesion rule) and 2) move away from other worms if they get too close (known as the separation rule). There is some randomness thrown in so that worms will sporadically move in an arbitrary direction, to give the system a more organic feel. The result is the effect you see: a shifting pattern of motion comprised of groups of individuals, each of which is just moving according to the same two rules.

NEW YORK — A small software developer on Monday plans to unveil a suite of applications — browser, camera, games and more — based on the new Google-endorsed operating system, Android.

A La Mobile, based in San Ramon, Calif., a start-up dedicated to Linux-based "open" systems for mobile devices, says the demonstration proves that Android can deliver on its promise of making it easier for consumers to get access to all sorts of applications.

The open nature of Android means, "There can be a lot more customization, reducing the cost of devices as well as development time," says Pauline Lo Alker, A La Mobile's CEO.
