Philips Color E-Paper for iRex Readers

Color E-Paper That Rivals the Real Thing

Turning pixels on their side may finally mean high-quality color electronic paper.

Despite Amazon's promise to reinvent the newspaper and magazine industry with its new, large-screen Kindle DX electronic reader, some people may be reluctant to embrace the technology until full-color displays are possible. A new approach developed by Philips now offers fresh hope for color e-paper displays that are so bright and clear that even traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) will pale in comparison.

According to Kars-Michiel Lenssen, who headed the work at Philips Research, based in Eindhoven, in the Netherlands, the new approach has the potential to create color images that are three times brighter than displays that use color filters, including LCDs. "This is the closest an electronic-paper technology ever got to printed paper," he says.

Bringing the newspaper medium into the digital age

Although all modern newspapers are available on-line, the paper copy that can be tucked under the arm and read virtually anywhere still holds a lot of attractions. Recognizing this fact, Philips Applied Technologies took a completely new look at the newspaper medium and how we use it. This led to the development of the E-reader for iRex Technologies. The E-reader is a true digital replacement for the paper newspaper offering all the convenience of this classical news medium and a lot else besides.

iRex Developing High Quality Full Color Digital Readers

Eindhoven, 2 June 2009 ‐ The world’s leading provider of e‐reading solutions, Netherlands-based iRex Technologies announced new progress on development of a next generation of color, writable, ultra-thin digital readers expected to launch mid 2011. This news reaffirms and substantiates iRex’s position as a leading innovator in the digital reading market following their 2008 launch of the iRex DR1000. Leading the way for others, the DR1000 was the first commercially available ‘writable’ digital reader with a 10.2 inch screen.

Fujitsu's FLEPia Colour eBook Reader

Fujitsu subsidiary Fujitsu Fronttech has introduced the FLEPia (Japanese), which the company is touting as the "first color e-paper mobile terminal"—that's what most consumers would describe as a color ebook reader.

Fujitsu FLEPia colour eBook now on sale!

Inside the Fujitsu FLEPia there’s Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB and SD card slots and a battery good for 40 hours of reading time. And that gorgeous screen on the Fujitsu FLEPia is an 8 inch 1024×768 touchscreen job, so there’s no need for a keyboard like the Kindle and Kindle 2.

The Fujitsu FLEPia begins shipping April 20, but it’s up for pre-order on Fujitsu’s Japanese site right now for the sit-down-first sum of £725. If you stump up for one, be sure to let us know how you find it: this has got to be the way forward for glossy print magazines.

BeBook 2 e-reader revealed and in the wild at CeBIT 2009!

BeBook £229

There are at least a half dozen e-Book readers on the market at the moment, all practically indistinguishable in terms of feature set and, in many cases, appearance. The BeBook scores, though, with its neat, intuitive operating system and smooth rapid page turn that quickly lets you forget you have a high-tech gadget in your hands. A huge library of classic books bundled with the reader sweetens the deal considerably.

The device itself is very neat. It's far cooler looking than Amazon's unwieldy Kindle, with an impressive battery life that allows around 7,000 page turns (from a 4-hour charge) a 6-inch reflective screen, weighting in at just 220g including the battery.

Foxit eSlick eBook Reader

Clipped from: Foxit eSlick

E-ink screen – extremely clear and easy on the eyes

Utilizing the revolutionary electronic-paper display technology by E Ink Corporation, the eSlick provides a sharp, black-and-white screen that looks and reads just like it would on real paper. So now you can read text just as easily in bright sunlight as you would in your own living room. Also, the text in the screen is very crisp and easy to read. The eSlick screen does not have the angle-of-view issue like LCD screens do, so users can comfortably read as long as they like.

Thin and lightweight - easy to hold and carry

With the weight of 6.4 ounces (180g) and the thickness of 0.4 (9.2mm), eSlick is thinner and lighter than a typical paperback, and fits well in your hand. You can fit thousands of books on the eSlick and its very easy to hold and read both indoors and outdoors. Actually, you can take it anywhere with you - the park, the bus, the doctors office, even when traveling etc.

Competition in the e-reader market is heating up. Foxit Software's eSlick is rolling out a digital reader with a $259 price tag ($229 at launch), undercutting Sony's e-Reader and Amazon's Kindle by at least $100. The cheaper eSlick seems better poised to compete with Sony's device, as it doesn't have the WiFi/subscription content that has drawn Kindle buyers in droves.

Foxit Enters eBook Reader Race

[...]

From a technology standpoint, the Foxit eSlick seems remarkably similar to its rivals. It uses the same screen technology developed by E Ink as the other two, displayed on a 600 x 800 display. The ebook weighs 6.4 ounces (180 grams) and measures 7.4 inches x 4.7 inches x 0.4 inches, thinner and lighter than the Sony PRS-500 and the Kindle. The Kindle takes two hours to recharge, however, and the eSlick requires three or more.

The eSlick also lacks the wireless capablities of the Kindle, substituting the dedicated wireless connection with a prosaic USB port. Internally, the device contains 128 Mbytes of RAM, with an SD card slot that supports up to 4-Gbyte cards. It does include an MP3 player, however, so users will be able to take their ebooks, as well as their tunes, on the road.
