A Digital Beauty Machine

A beauty machine 'that makes average face a knockout'
Washington (PTI): Researchers have built what they claim is a beauty machine that, with just the press of a button, can turn a picture of an ordinary face into that of a cover model.

"Beauty, contrary to what most people think, is not simply in the eye of the beholder. With the aid of computers, attractiveness can be objectified and boiled down to a function of mathematical distances or ratios.

"This function is the basis for the beauty machine," lead researcher Prof Daniel Cohen-Or of Tel Aviv University's Blavatnik School of Computer Sciences said.

When it comes to examining the perfect face, scientists say it all comes down to geometry. Declan Cashin reports

Scientists at the University of Nebraska say they have developed software that can predict whether or not a face will be deemed beautiful, using a calculation that calibrates the symmetry and geometry of the face.

Amazingly, the boffins' beauty results are practically identical to a code that da Vinci and the Old Masters followed to paint perfect beauty back in the 15th century.

Golden ratio
The golden section is a line segment sectioned into two according to the golden ratio. The total length a+b is to the longer segment a as a is to the shorter segment b.

A regular square pyramid is determined by its medial right triangle, whose edges are the pyramid's apothem (a), semi-base (b), and height (h); the face inclination angle is also marked. Mathematical proportions b:h:a of and and are of particular interest in relation to Egyptian pyramids.

Neuroesthetics - Beauty in the Brain

Publication Cover
clipped from scienceblogs.com

Neuroesthetics seeks to identify the neural basis of aesthetic experience - how does the brain give rise to the perception of beauty? A new paper in Network indicates that artists consistently create works which contain the same statistical properties as natural scenes, even when the objects being depicted do not themselves contain such statistics when photographed.

Redies, Hanisch, Blickhan and Denzler review previous work demonstrating that the "spatial frequencies" of natural scenes (essentially, their spatial complexity) follow a 1/f power spectrum, where increased spatial complexity is increasingly restricted to smaller portions of the scene. This property is sometimes referred to as "scale invariance" and is reflected in a variety of natural data, including human reaction time data, spontaneous fluctuations in brain activity, and perhaps in the connectivity of biological networks - neural and social alike.
