Sony's New HMZ-T2 Personal 3D Virtual Reality Viewer

Sony trims the fat on latest Personal 3D Viewer headset



Along with its 84-inch 4K TV, Sony also chose IFA 2012 to unveil the latest version of its head-mounted Personal 3D Viewer. The successor to the HMZ-T1 we tried out at IFA last year, Sony claims the updated HMZ-T2 model boasts a sharper display, improved sound and is some 20 percent lighter, making it easier on the ol’ neck muscles.

The biggest strength of the original model was its 3D image, which because of its true stereoscopic 3D effect delivered by separate OLED displays for each eye meant a pristine, cross-talk free, 3D image. Eye fatigue is also further reduced with the introduction of an auto-color temperature adjustment that gradually lowers the image tone intensity from blue to red. Other technical improvements achieved include a 24p True Cinema mode for viewing films at the speed as they are displayed in movie theaters.

Barco's RP-360 a Breakthrough in Flight Simulator Technology

Flight simulator gives 360-degree immersion | TG Daily

Belgian company Barco has unveiled what's probably the most advanced flight-training simulator in the world, a fully immersive, 360 degree system using rear projection.

The RP-360 is designed to give pilots the most realistic view possible, and can be hooked up to other simulators so that several pilots can carry out mission training together.

It's claimed to be the first flight sim to give the pilot a completely uninterrupted 360-degree view, and can be used to simulate a number of different fighter jets.



Barco's RP-360 is a rear-projected spherical display system for full 360° immersive training. The system performance produces the most accurate image quality on the market today.

Haptic perception

Haptic perception is the process of recognizing objects through touch. It involves a combination of somatosensory perception of patterns on the skin surface (e.g., edges, curvature, and texture) and proprioception of hand position and conformation.

Our daily lives are more and more computerized with advance in networking and computers.
It is increasing importance such as interfaces, sensors and robotics. These technologies connects the information-world and the real-world.

This demonstration focuses on two haptic experiences: sensing the composition and stiffness of an object, and estimating dynamics for multiple objects. Slight vibrations express the differences between materials and degrees of stiffness.

The developers of the ring actually debuted it a little earlier in the year with a poster at SIGGRAPH. Virtual Creatures which interact with the device can be moved by the users pushes and respond to the type of contact. With light petting, the VC will display happy emotions. A strong push will cause the VC to avoid or react negatively to the user. This complex behavior for the VC gives an added layer of realism to the augmented reality interaction. After all, what use is having a finger that can manipulate a virtual world if the virtual world doesn’t react appropriately.

A Simulator for Brain Surgeons

A virtual-reality simulator promises safer operations and better training.

A new simulator that lets neurosurgeons rehearse before operating--like pilots on a flight simulator--could revolutionize how doctors train for and handle brain surgery.

NeuroTouch, the prototype simulator developed by Canada's National Research Council (NRC) and several other research groups, gives surgeons a dry run in virtual reality before entering the operating room, potentially reducing mistakes.
