Audi Visions OLED Technology




Berlitz is one of the development engineers who have helped put Audi in the lead in modern automobile lighting technology. LED daytime running lights and headlights are development milestones; the next step forward will be OLED. Displays using this technique have already reached series production maturity in the electronic industry. Berlitz and his team cooperate closely with Audi Design on utilizing OLEDs as exterior lighting for the automobile

Audi actually has 3 OLED based designs. The first is rather simple - rear lights that are made from four small red OLED panels, and a flashing turn indicator made from 8 panels.

The second OLED application is covering the car with stripes made of hundreds of small triangular OLEDs. This is beautiful, and also enables the car "to be identified in a whole series of ways that can be constantly varied".
The third application is the rear-mounted "swarm" - which makes tiny OLED lighting panels into a large display.


Audi Visions OLED Technology

The Audi roadmap for introducing OLEDs to series production will take several years to put into effect. At the current level of development, the new diodes only withstand low currents and the acceptable temperature range ends at about 80 degrees Celsius. OLEDs will make an appearance as rear lights in the relatively near future; for brake lights, which have to be about five times brighter, a few more years will elapse. But Berlitz can also visualize white OLEDs being used for daytime running lights and side lights.

The biggest target of all – especially for Audi’s designers – are three-dimensional OLEDs. The first prototypes are now appearing as part of a project with public support. They are fascinating: delicate, almost weightless ring-shaped sources of light, installed on various levels in the rear light units of an Audi TT.

Bright future for lighting technology with glowing OLED wallpaper

Lomox Limited, a two-year-old company based in north Wales, awarded more than £450,000 today by the government-backed Carbon Trust to accelerate the development of its OLED technology.

It is hoped the technology will help cut carbon emissions from lighting in the next few years.

The company said it can also be used for flat screen televisions, computers and mobile phone displays.

And because it needs a very low operating voltage - of just three to five volts - it can be powered by solar panels or batteries, so it can be used outside to light road signs and barriers without the need for mains electricity.

Ken Lacey, chief executive of Lomox Ltd, which is attempting to bring the technology to market, said the company hoped to make it available to lighting and screen producers by 2012, with outdoor applications leading the way.

    Sony was one of the exhibitors at Display Expo held in Japan just last week and of course they showcased their OLED TVs. One of them was a prototype 21 inch OLED panel with 1366 by 768 resolution. The contrast ratio is the same as my XEL-1 which is 1000000 to 1. The design has dramatically changed and looks futuristic in a way with the stand fully integrated.

    SonyDrive XEL-1 OLED TVIn October 2007,Sony introduced the world's first OLED TV - the XEL-1. This first model is a highly priced (~2,500$), small sized (11") Television - more of a commercial-prototype than anything else, Sony only makes around a thousand units a month.

    Sony's 27" OLED - the XEL-2?

    Sony 27 OLED prototype at CES 2008 Sony announced in May 2008 that they are working on a new TV. This one will be a 27" model - which is large enough to be called a television indeed. Sony even showed us a prototype of that screen (picture on the left).

    In April 2009, Sony displayed a new 21" OLED TV prototype. These TVs have a 1366x768 resolution, 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and they are only 1.4mm thick. Will this be the XEL-2 TV?

    Organic light-emitting diode

    An organic light emitting diode (OLED), also light emitting polymer (LEP) and organic electro luminescence (OEL), is any light emitting diode (LED) whose emissive electroluminescent layer is composed of a film of organic compounds. The layer usually contains a polymer substance that allows suitable organic compounds to be deposited. They are deposited in rows and columns onto a flat carrier by a simple "printing" process. The resulting matrix of pixels can emit light of different colors.

    Such systems can be used in television screens, computer displays, small, portable system screens such as cell phones and PDAs, advertising, information and indication. OLEDs can also be used in light sources for general space illumination, and large-area light-emitting elements. OLEDs typically emit less light per area than inorganic solid-state based LEDs which are usually designed for use as point-light sources.

    A significant benefit of OLED displays over traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) is that OLEDs do not require a backlight to function. Thus they draw far less power and, when powered from a battery, can operate longer on the same charge. Because there is no need for a backlight, an OLED display can be much thinner than an LCD panel. Degradation of OLED materials has limited their use so far.[1]

    As displays get thinner and processers more compact, a new world of conceptual computing is available. Designer Tai Chiem has envisioned a concept he calls the Dell XPS Baton PC. The Baton PC is an ultra-portable system that includes two flexible, thin OLED film screens that can be slid out from the central baton in many ways: as a keyboard and monitor, as a single-screen tablet, as the base of a desktop system and otherwise. At the end of the day, just roll up the Baton and you’re on your way.

    Apparently what Samsung are doing is tiling two OLED displays side by side, to create a larger display. So this is not really a flexible OLED at all - just two thin OLED put together!

    As a reminder, Samsung displayed this new flexible display a few weeks ago. It's a 4" display, 480x272, contrast 100,000:1, 200cd/m2 luminence. It is very thin - 0.05mm.
