Botiful the Android Telepresence Robot

Botiful Is an Awesome Android Robot You Can Control via Skype | PCWorld

Imagine if you could talk to your family, kids or friends on Skype, while following them around, looking at whoever you want whenever you want, and walking around the room freely as if you were there. Sounds cool, right? Botiful, a prototype currently being funded on Kickstarter, integrates with Skype and carries your Android phone around, letting whoever you're talking to control it as they wish.

Botiful the Android telepresence robot (with video) - Accessories - News - HEXUS.net

The Botiful project information page suggests that Botiful is useful for;
  • Skype video calls and video conferencing
  • Baby monitoring
  • Playing remotely with your children
  • Safely inspect areas that are heard to get to, such as under the car
  • Social events, almost be there when you can’t be present
  • Visiting a place, while you are still at home
  • Entertain and see a pet remotely
When a friend or colleague accepts a robot enabled video call you can see the following overlay upon the video display with which to control Botiful’s body and head motion. Below the directional interface there are extra robot app icons displayed.

Botiful telepresence robot is extremely cute | Ubergizmo

Similar to a computer mouse that runs on wheels, the Botiful is more than just another spot for your smartphone to rest. Functioning as a standalone device, whenever one places a Skype video call over it with the user, the Botiful telepresence robot will work to its primary ability. The caller is able to check out all of the directional controls which enable them to manipulate the Botiful so that it functions as an active segment of the conversation. As the handset is held in place using a magnet, it will communicate over a Bluetooth connection. On-screen directional controls also allows users to move it around so that there are different perspectives to view from.

Botiful bot makes telepresence easy and affordable - Liliputing

If you back the project for $199 you get one of the first 150 Botiful bots for your very own. Techie folks interested in developing for the Botiful can get access to the SDK for pledges of $245 and up. The goodies get more interesting as you go up in price.

Currently, the project isn’t fully backed yet, though they’re almost halfway to the $90,000 goal. iPhone owners, don’t feel left out. If the project gets $100,000 in backing they’ll work on an iOS version, too.

TeleHuman & BodiPod: Telepresence with Holographic 3D Telepods

Holographic 3D Telepods May Revolutionize Videoconferencing -- Science & Technology -- Sott.net

A Queen's University researcher has taken inspiration from Star Trek to create an other-worldly way to meet with one another. Using a series of strategically placed projectors and Microsoft Kinect image sensors, Dr. Roel Vertegaal and his team at the Human Media Lab in Canada have created a human-scale 3D videoconferencing pod, allowing people in different places to meet with one another, just as if they were in the same room at the same time.

"Why skype when you can talk to a life-size 3D holographic image of another person?"

Beam me up Scotty: Life-size hologram-like telepods revolutionize videoconferencing | Human Media Lab :: Queen's University

While the technology may seem like it comes from a galaxy far, far away, it's not as complicated as most would think. Dr. Vertegaal and his team used mostly existing hardware – including an array of Microsoft Kinect sensors, a 3D projector, a 1.8 metre-tall translucent acrylic cylinder and a convex mirror.

The research team, also consisting of John Bolton, Kibum Kim, Peng Wang and McGill Prof. Jeremy Cooperstock, used the same Pod to create another application called BodiPod, which presents an interactive 3D anatomy model of the human body. The model can be explored 360 degrees around the model through gestures and speech interactions.

When people approach the Pod, they can wave in thin air to peel off layers of tissue.  In X-ray mode, as users get closer to the Pod they can see deeper into the anatomy, revealing the model’s muscles, organs and bone structure. Voice commands such as "show brain" or "show heart" will automatically zoom into a 3D model of a brain or heart.

Teleportation made real

Have you ever dreamt to be able to teleport yourself anywhere with a snap of your fingers? This is exactly what you can do now with Jazz Connect.

The principle is simple: the robot stands in a remote location and will serve as your personal avatar. It can move and perceive its surrounding with its embedded camera, speaker and microphone. Far away, in your office, you start your favorite web browser and connect to the robot through a simple web interface. You can see what it sees, and move it around to interact with the people there.

A new way of communicating

Unlike traditional videoconferencing systems, Jazz Connect is mobile and its head can rotate to give a sense of its surroundings. It is easily remote-controlled through an intuitive web interface, and it gives you more freedom to interact with the robot's surroundings the way you want.

Company profile

Gostai is born in March 2006, when Jean-Christophe Baillie founded the company to foster the development of Urbi, an innovative operating system for robotics. Since these early years, the company has continuously developed a whole set of software technologies for robotics and AI, and created an ecosystem of partners and users.

In 2010, as a culmination of years of expertize into software and hardware for robotics, Gostai launched its first telepresence autonomous robot: Jazz.

MITRE -- Head Tracking Visual Telepresence

http://www.mitre.org/news/digest/adva...

"With remote robot interaction we can use visual telepresence to trick users' brains into thinking their eyes have been transported onto the robot," says Kyle Fawcett. "This unlocks the brain's natural ability to build a mental model of the remote environment. The better our vision system mimics interaction with the remote environment, the more we tap into our brain's natural spatial mapping abilities."

MITRE immersive spherical vision system

MITRE scientists have worked out a solution to this latency problem replacing the limited field of view camera on the pan-tilt unit with a spherical vision camera which has no moving parts. The camera of choice is the Ladybug commercially sold by Point Grey Research in Canada. Stanford's Urban Challenge autonomous car also used the same camera for part of its perception system. This spherical vision system consists of 6 cameras which capture images simultaneously covering a large portion of the view sphere around it. Software stitches the images together into a single view in real-time. These spherical vision images are then available to the operator to view for any orientation of his head.

Anybots QA -- A Telepresence Robot

Clipped from: Telepresence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Telepresence

Telepresence refers to a set of technologies which allow a person to feel as if they were present, to give the appearance that they were present, or to have an effect, at a location other than their true location.

Telepresence requires that the senses of the user, or users, are provided with such stimuli as to give the feeling of being in that other location. Additionally, the user(s) may be given the ability to affect the remote location. In this case, the user's position, movements, actions, voice, etc. may be sensed, transmitted and duplicated in the remote location to bring about this effect. Therefore information may be traveling in both directions between the user and the remote location.
