Iriver e-book / tablet prototype.

iriver prepping handwriting-friendly e-book / tablet?

To wrap up its CES week, iriver has some pictures and scattered Korean text about its booth experience and product reception in Vegas over the past days. Tucked below all the self-congratulation, however, is what looks to be an as yet unannounced prototype from the ever-active iriver designers. The product appears to be an e-book of sorts, but with handwriting recognition and potentially a color display.

Colour e-readers with video shown off

A colour e-reader that supports video and potentially web browsing has been shown off by Dutch researchers.

The prototype uses screen technology - based on century-old science - that its makers say is up to four times more energy efficient than LCD screens.

Once established in the e-reader market, Dutch firm Liquavista hope to see its displays integrated into other devices in the future.

But analysts question whether consumers will be enticed by the greener gadgets.

Liquavista said it expects the first e-readers using the "electrowetting" technology to be available by the middle of 2011 and the technology to then become more widespread.

If that claim stands up, it would make this game-changing device nearly as energy-efficient as today’s monochrome readers.

The Asus DR-570 packs a 5.7-inch OLED display with a sharp 768×1024 resolution with a 0.03 second refresh rate, 4GB of flash storage, 412MB of RAM, a 1530mAh battery and an SD/SDHC card slot, and it weighs just 200g.

Format wise, the Asus DR-570 will support ePub, PDF, TXT, MP3, MP4 and AVI files and play back Flash videos too so it’ll be a real multimedia juggler. We can confirm it’ll pack Wi-Fi and 3G, but there’s no mention of WiMax as with the larger, monochrome Asus DR-950.

Taiwan-based Prime View International, which last year acquired E-Ink, a top vendor of electronic paper displays, displayed 6-inch and 9.7-inch color e-reader screens at a trade show in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen.

PVI has shown its color-screen technology to buyers of its displays including Amazon and Barnes & Noble, which sells the Nook e-reader, the PVI spokeswoman said. But she declined to comment on whether Amazon planned to use the screens in the Kindle.

Fujitsu’s FLEPia seeks to address the issue of color depth with an eReader that can display up to 260,000 colors when in high-def mode while still rendering black and white text fairly fast in Quick Mode. To get to this depth the reader takes three passes at rendering a page.

There are at least a half dozen e-Book readers on the market at the moment, all practically indistinguishable in terms of feature set and, in many cases, appearance. Six years ago, Apple Inc. began remaking the digital music market with a portable gadget that could hold an entire music collection, downloaded inexpensively from the Web.

Now Amazon.com Inc., the online retail giant, has come up with what it hopes will be the iPod of e-book readers, the Kindle, which can download books, newspapers and Web content wirelessly, and includes a keyboard for annotating books as well.

Besides ease of downloading, Mr. Bezos believes Amazon can win over consumers with attractive pricing for content. It is initially offering more than 90,000 electronic versions of books for Kindle, with best-sellers and new releases priced at $9.99 and classics as low as $1.99. Newspapers such as the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal and magazines such as Fortune will be available at monthly subscription fees.

Zoals we al eerder vermeldden (LinkNotes: E-book readers) valt en staat de introductie van bruikbare e-book readers met de ontwikkeling van goede displays . Zie voor een overzicht van de huidige stand van zaken: MobileRead Wiki - E-book Reader Matrix. Het laatste nieuws is nu dat Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., Ltd. (TMD) is gestart met de massaproductie van een hoge-resolution, 16-level grayscale, hoog-reflecterend, 5-inch VGA monochrome TFT liquid crystal display (LCD) met een hoge resolutie.

"The newly developed TFT LCD adopts a new, highly efficient reflective surface and internal reflection technology to maximize such optical performance, providing clear and crisp images, and is able to display small, well-defined characters easily. In addition, the new product has completely eliminated the need for a backlight thanks to the highly reflective optical performance, and thus enables a low power system design, one of the essential requirements for electronic dictionaries and ensures longer battery-powered operation. E-book readers

E-book readers zullen waarschijnlijk binnen afzienbare tijd gewilde gadgets worden. Veel zal afhangen van de kwaliteit van het beeldscherm, de accu, het geheugen enz. Met name de Sony® Portable Reader PRS-500 die eind november op de markt komt schijnt veelbelovend te zijn. Wellicht nog iets eerder, zo meldt zojuist MobileRead Networks komt er een e-book reader van Staretek met vergelijkbare specificaties op de Chinese markt.

Foxit Software's eSlick is rolling out a digital reader with a $259 price tag ($229 at launch), undercutting Sony's e-Reader and Amazon's Kindle by at least $100. The cheaper eSlick seems better poised to compete with Sony's device, as it doesn't have the WiFi/subscription content that has drawn Kindle buyers in droves.

From a technology standpoint, the Foxit eSlick seems remarkably similar to its rivals. It uses the same screen technology developed by E Ink as the other two, displayed on a 600 x 800 display. The ebook weighs 6.4 ounces (180 grams) and measures 7.4 inches x 4.7 inches x 0.4 inches, thinner and lighter than the Sony PRS-500 and the Kindle. The Kindle takes two hours to recharge, however, and the eSlick requires three or more.

The eSlick also lacks the wireless capablities of the Kindle, substituting the dedicated wireless connection with a prosaic USB port. Internally, the device contains 128 Mbytes of RAM, with an SD card slot that supports up to 4-Gbyte cards. It does include an MP3 player, however, so users will be able to take their ebooks, as well as their tunes, on the road.

Bridgestone Corp announced an electronic paper (e-paper) device based on its "Quick-response Liquid Powder" Oct 26, 2009.

The company expects that the device will be used for browsing electronic books and electronic data. It will be tested with the assistance system for liaison officers at Kansai Urban Banking Corp from the spring of 2010.
