Scientist Teleport Matter More Than Three Feet

Scientists have come a bit closer to achieving the "Star Trek" feat of teleportation.

No one is galaxy-hopping, or even beaming people around, but for the first time, information has been teleported between two separate atoms across a distance of a meter — about a yard.

Quantum Teleportation Is a Go!

Researchers have accomplished teleportation, though not of the “Beam me up, Scotty” variety. Instead, they sent information between two individual atoms of the element ytterbium, which were suspended in separate containers three feet apart. Because the quantum information instantly hops from one atom to the other without ever crossing the space between the two, scientists call the transfer “teleportation” [Science News].

Over the years, teleportation experiments have demonstrated that quantum states - for example, the spin of a particle or the polarization of a photon - can be teleported using a variety of methods. But the researchers behind the latest experiment … claim that this is the first time information has been teleported between two separate atoms in unconnected enclosures [MSNBC].

Ancient Nile Water Levels Indicate Sun-Climate Connection

NASA Links Ancient Nile Records to Sun's Impact on Climate Change

NASA announced that a group of NASA and university scientists has found a convincing link between long-term solar and climate variability in a unique and unexpected source: directly measured ancient water level records of the Nile, Earth's longest river, which runs south to north through Egypt.

Clipped from: NASA - NASA Finds Sun-Climate Connection in Old Nile Records

"Since the time of the pharaohs, the water levels of the Nile were
accurately measured, since they were critically important for
agriculture and the preservation of temples in Egypt," she said. "These
records are highly accurate and were obtained directly, making them a
rare and unique resource for climatologists to peer back in time."

...

The researchers found some clear links between the sun's activity
and climate variations. The Nile water levels and aurora records had
two somewhat regularly occurring variations in common - one with a
period of about 88 years and the second with a period of about 200
years.

...

So what causes these cyclical links between solar variability and the Nile? The authors suggest that variations in the sun's ultraviolet energy cause adjustments in a climate pattern called the Northern Annular Mode, which affects climate in the atmosphere of the Northern Hemisphere during the winter. At sea level, this mode becomes the North Atlantic Oscillation, a large-scale seesaw in atmospheric mass that affects how air circulates over the Atlantic Ocean. During periods of high solar activity, the North Atlantic Oscillation's influence extends to the Indian Ocean. These adjustments may affect the distribution of air temperatures, which subsequently influence air circulation and rainfall at the Nile River's sources in eastern equatorial Africa. When solar activity is high, conditions are drier, and when it is low, conditions are wetter.

Swiss Company Offers Paper Homes

A Swiss company known as The Wall AG, has created a $5,000, 390 square foot modular home.

This house is marketed towards third-world towns, for long-term refugees. The Universal World House can be transported and used almost anywhere. It is light, easily assembled, environmentally friendly, earthquake-proof and extremely cheap.

The Universal World House is crafted out of a resin-soaked cellulose, made from recycled paper, shaped into honeycomb walls, which provide structural integrity and insulation for the home. It also comes outfitted for plumbing and boarding facilities of up to 8 residents.

The home's inventor, Gerd Niemoeller, says that the paper house weighs just 1,763lb, which is lighter than a VW Golf. “Without the foundation block, the whole house actually weighs in at about 400kg,” says the design engineer. However, despite it being light, the house will not simply blow away.

SwissCell walls are based on hexagonal structures similar to honeycombs: the technique results in lightweight but strong boards, typical used in the vehicle and aircraft industry. Usually honeycomb boards are made of aluminum – an expensive and energy intensive material. SwissCell, by contrast, is a cellulose product, impregnated by synthetic resin.

Nano Machines and a Nano-GPS System to Combat Cancer

clipped from www.zmescience.com

Mini-”submarine” will be able to combat cancer within 3 years

clipped from www.zmescience.com

The unique invention will not carry curios scientist inside the human body, but will be made out of biological materials and will be able to deliver drugs in order to destroy cancer cells and faulty proteins.

These biological nano-machines can be targeted against a specific kind of cells, their ability to track down leukocytes in mice with ulcerative colitis already having been observed. The “submarine” will use a nano-sized carrier which works like a GPS in order to find the right cells and deliver their charge to them, leaving the healthy tissue untouched. Among the first to work by using this revolutionary idea, the new disease fighter uses a drug based on RNAi, which reprograms cells to function correctly and destroys the ones affected by cancer.

A Nano-GPS System

"Our lab is creating biological nano-machines," says Dr. Peer. "These machines can target specific cells. In fact, we can target any protein that might be causing disease or disorder in the human body. This new invention treats the source, not the symptoms."

"We have tapped into the same ancient system the human body uses to protect itself from viruses," says Dr. Peer, who is also investigating a number of topical applications for his medical subs. "And the beauty of it is the basic material of our nano-carriers is natural," he says.

The Tel Aviv University team plans to launch their medical submarines, following FDA regulations, within three to five years. Their immediate focus is on blood, pancreatic, breast and brain cancers.
