GM to Sell Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Car By 2012

General Motors has revealed that it is still on-track to bring a hydrogen fuel-cell car to market, within the next three years.

Industry insiders had speculated that the imminent retirement of existing boss Larry Burns would lead to the fuel-cell program being mothballed, but according to new R&D chief Alan Taub, GM will continue with its development of the technology.

“Technology leadership is one of the pillars of the company,” said Taub. “That is going to remain, and it will probably be emphasised as part of the brand of GM.”

On the left side of the photo above is the fuel cell stack from the hydrogen-powered GM Equinox (93kW of output) and on the right side you can see the new fifth generation GM fuel cell stack (93kW of output also). Even without looking at the technical specifications, it is pretty obvious that the next gen GM fuel cell is an improvement on the previous version ...

How Fuel Cells Work

A fuel cell harnesses the electricity created in the chemical reaction that occurs when hydrogen and oxygen are combined. Hundreds of fuel cells are "stacked" together, combining their electrical outputs into enough electricity to power a car.

Hydrogen + Oxygen = Fuel

THE BOTTOM LINE

Vehicles running on hydrogen use no petroleum and have zero tailpipe emissions Clean steam is the only thing that comes out the back of the car. But certain obstacles have to be overcome before hydrogen cars hit the market on a large scale like: improving battery life, lowering the market price and tweaking the technology. Hydrogen is difficult to make and the process sometimes requires fossil fuels. Some stations rely on waste hydrogen products from factories, instead of fossil fuels. Right now, there is no electric car that can go farther than 200 miles and all batteries have a limited lifetime.

Power Flower -- A Green Computer

The Power Flower. one of the finalists at Dell's Design ReGeneration competition, issuing the challenge of environmentally responsible computing technology, is a highly conceptual device running on hydrogen fuel cell technology.

The Power Flower is highly conceptual computing device. Initially conceived as a specialized videoconferencing device, it evolved into being a complete computer.

The mental model of “the computer” was stripped to the bare minimum elements: input, processing, output, and a way to power it. It was made to be more natural, to appeal to the customer’s sensitivities towards environmental issues and also how the customer relates to technology semantically.

Instead of using a keyboard and mouse, the person interacts gesturally on the desk surface as a camera captures the movements. A face camera, which also houses a microphone and speaker, is directed at the person’s face.

Power

The device runs on hydrogen fuel cell technology. Hydrogen mixes with oxygen to produce electricity. The only byproduct of this process is water. The cells can be recharged with more hydrogen, which will become more feasible as more manufacturers bring hydrogen fuel cell cars to market,

angstromhydrophone.gif "Fuel cell maker Angstrom Power and cell phone maker Motorola have teamed up to create a prototype mobile phone that runs on a hydrogen fuel cell. Crave reports.

There are still hurdles that need to be solved. For one, hydrogen refueling stations aren’t even close to being available in most places in the world. And then there is the issue of safety, though the company claims that the battery is perfectly safe. There is real interest by the major manufacturers, and if all goes well, expect to see them by 2010.

Angstrom has thought out some answers: it's designing a home-based unit that lets a user pour in water and watch the phone automatically recharge. And it has ambitions to install recharging kiosks at places like Starbucks or 7/11.

The HydroPak portable power generator

HydroPak Portable Fuel Cell Power Pack

Millennium Cell Inc. and Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies announced the completion of a pre-production version of the HydroPak portable power generator that incorporates a unique water-activated cartridge system. The HydroPak product combines Horizon's fuel cells with Millennium Cell's Hydrogen on Demand storage technology to offer a clean and quiet power generator for use by consumers and professionals for emergency and recreational purposes.

Millennium Cell

This power source is a high energy alternative to lead acid battery packs and portable generators. The HydroPak(TM) system, together with each cartridge:

  • Provides infinite shelf life and enough energy to recharge an average notebook computer 8 to 10 times

  • Can run indoors with quiet operation and zero harmful emissions

  • Is quieter, lighter and smaller than generators

  • Stores more energy than possible with batteries

  • Has a lower cost than any similar fuel cell device
