  • The Immersive Cocoon will let you step inside interactive 3D virtual worlds
  • Motion-tracking cameras will provide a "Minority Report"-style interface
  • It could be used to explore virtual museums, like the "Virtual Guggenheim"
  • Augmented reality superimposes virtual information onto the real world

LONDON, England (CNN) -- You're walking along a street in Roman Pompeii at the start of the first millennium when you notice a spectacular stone building. You reach out towards it and your guide informs you it's a temple to the god Jupiter, built in 200 BC. With a flick of your wrist you save the data and, school assignment complete, you step out of your Cocoon and back into your living room.

Educational historical journeys are just one possible use of the Immersive Cocoon, a walk-in virtual-reality pod being developed by NAU, an international design collective that aims to revolutionize the way we interact with computers.
When complete, the Immersive Cocoon will be a sleek and shiny human-sized dome. Step inside and you'll be enveloped by a 360° display screen and full surround sound.

StarCAVE A 3-D Virtual Reality Environment

The StarCAVE,developed at UC San Diego, is a virtual reality (VR) room where scientific models and animations are projected in stereo on 360-degree screens surrounding the viewer, and onto the floor as well.

Its name sounds like something out of science fiction, but the
StarCAVE at the University of California, San Diego is now a science
fact. The virtual-reality environment allows groups of scientists to
venture into worlds as small as nanoparticles and as big as the cosmos
– permitting new insights that could fuel discoveries in many fields.
Early users of the StarCAVE include UC San Diego researchers in
biomedicine, neuroscience, structural engineering, archaeology, earth
science, genomics, art history and other disciplines.

eon icube offers incredibly immersive 3d vr experience

This VR technology provides for a completely immersive 3-dimensional experience by surrounding users in a cube of digital imagery, combined with stereoscopic glasses and motion-tracking hardware to provide for a dizzying ride through virtual environments.

EON Reality’s ICube system uses an array of high-definition video projectors to bounce real-time CGI images into a cubic room covered with white screen surfaces. Each visitor dons a special pair of lightweight 3D glasses which can be outfitted with IR markers to detect head movements.

EON ICUBE

The EON ICUBE™, is a revolutionary PC based multi-sided immersive environment in which participants are completely surrounded by virtual imagery and 3D sound. The EON ICUBE represents a significant innovative milestone in high-end visualization systems development. Typically, high-end immersive systems have until today been complex, difficult to use and expensive to maintain. Unlike the older generation CAVE®, the EON ICUBE is easy to use even for non programmers, provides an unsurpassed speed of immersive content creation and deployment, utilizes a new light enhancing rigid wall material, and has built-in collaborative capabilities.

Haptic Perception in Virtual Reality

clipped from en.wikipedia.org
Haptic perception

Haptic perception is the process of recognizing objects through touch. It involves a combination of somatosensory perception of patterns on the skin surface (e.g., edges, curvature, and texture) and proprioception of hand position and conformation.

Our daily lives are more and more computerized with advance in networking and computers.
It is increasing importance such as interfaces, sensors and robotics. These technologies connects the information-world and the real-world.

Real-world and Information-world

This demonstration focuses on two haptic experiences: sensing the composition and stiffness of an object, and estimating dynamics for multiple objects. Slight vibrations express the differences between materials and degrees of stiffness.

Haptic Ring Touching Virtual Creatures in Mixed Reality Environment
We propose a new method for Symmetrical Haptic Interaction System with Virtual Creatures (VCs) in Mixed Reality (MR). In this work, we can interact VCs directly, not only through some tools but also with our fingers. If we touch VCs, we can see and feel their reaction.

Robots and virtual reality on show in Tokyo

clipped from singularityhub.com

The developers of the ring actually debuted it a little earlier in the year with a poster at SIGGRAPH. Virtual Creatures which interact with the device can be moved by the users pushes and respond to the type of contact. With light petting, the VC will display happy emotions. A strong push will cause the VC to avoid or react negatively to the user. This complex behavior for the VC gives an added layer of realism to the augmented reality interaction. After all, what use is having a finger that can manipulate a virtual world if the virtual world doesn’t react appropriately.

Google ventures into virtual reality with 'Lively'

Google thinks Lively will encourage even more people to dive into alternate realities because it isn't tethered to one Web site like Second Life, and it doesn't cost anything to use. After installing a small packet of software, a user can enter Lively from other Web sites, like social networking sites and blogs.

The Lively application already works on Facebook, one of the Web's hottest hangouts, and Google is working on a version suitable for an even larger online social network, News Corp.'s MySpace.
