Insects Use Plant Like a "Telephone"

resize.jpeg

Dutch ecologist Roxina Soler and her colleagues have discovered that
subterranean and aboveground herbivorous insects can communicate with each other by using plants as telephones. Subterranean insects issue chemical warning signals via the leaves of the plant. This way, aboveground insects are alerted that the plant is already 'occupied’.

'Quantum Hall-like effect' found in a bulk material without an applied magnetic field

A team of scientists from Princeton University has found that the so called quantum Hall effect, which is observed in two-dimensional electron systems subjected to low temperatures and strong magnetic fields can occur in a bulk crystal of bismuth-antimony without any external magnetic field being present.
This work, could lead to advances in new kinds of fast computing devices, of potential use in future electronic technologies.

NTT Firmo Card -- Contactless Authentication

A new product, called “Firmo,” consists of a card-sized transmitter carried in the user’s pocket. The card converts stored data into a weak electric field that extends across the body. When the user touches an object embedded with a compatible receiver a signal returned to the device allows contactless authentication

Firmo is based on NTT’s RedTacton human area network (HAN) technology, which is designed to allow convenient human-machine data exchange through natural physical contact — even through clothing, gloves and shoes.

"The integration of OpenSocial with gadgets gives you an opportunity to enhance your content for users by incorporating social features. For example, a books gadget could display what a user's friends are reading, allow users to request to borrow books from friends' libraries, and show users books that their friends recently rated. As users share content with their friends, your gadget will naturally build a broad audience for distributing content and driving traffic," explains the new developer site for iGoogle gadgets.

Integrated optics: the way to scale a quantum computer

One of the problems inherent in every implementation of quantum computing has been scaling. To gain a significant speed-up, we need a system that has enough qubits to represent the solution, but this has, so far, proven to be impossible to do in a way that accomplishes any useful work. Now, new research from Bristol University has described a method of creating optical quantum gates that can scale to many qubits reasonably well.

Researchers map the math in music

More than 2000 years ago Pythagoras reportedly discovered that pleasing musical intervals could be described using simple ratios.

And the so-called musica universalis or "music of the spheres" emerged in the Middle Ages as the philosophical idea that the proportions in the movements of the celestial bodies -- the sun, moon and planets -- could be viewed as a form of music, inaudible but perfectly harmonious.

Now, three music professors – Clifton Callender at Florida State University, Ian Quinn at Yale University and Dmitri Tymoczko at Princeton University -- have devised a new way of analyzing and categorizing music that takes advantage of the deep, complex mathematics they see enmeshed in its very fabric.
    Four-chord types

The broad effort follows upon earlier work by Tymoczko in which he developed geometric models for selected musical objects.

    The Kolibri Cordless 3D Sensor

The Kolibri Cordless sensor, developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics: a light and small device that can take 3D images of almost anything and almost anywhere. LED lights shine a projector light on an object, and two cameras record the image from two different angles. Then a computer compiles the data into a 3D image.

    Dynamic data in Google Earth

The new version 4.3 of Google Earth provides many new features, including the day/night effect a clouds layer, dynamic data of traffic, weather, news and more.
We've done several dynamic things already: traffic, weather, news courtesy of the New York Times, and YouTube. But don't wait for us to create more dynamic data - we've always believed that the greatest content is created by our users. Through the magic of Network Links in KML, any dataset can be set to auto-update at whatever interval is appropriate. The KML Gallery has several great examples, such as real-time earthquakes and current air quality.
Google Lat Long blog - News and Notes by the Google Earth and Maps team
you can now animate the Earth through different times of day! Check out how much more dramatic these hills look during sunset:
My favorite image is one of the Earth from space, overlaid with the cloud layer, and with the sun mode turned on:
If you're running the latest version of Google Earth, you'll notice a new "Weather" folder in the layers panel:

Google Spiders to Start Crawling The 'Deep' Web

google.jpgGoogle recently announced it will soon begin indexing the so-called "deep" web, those pages hiding behind HTML forms and other inadvertently spider-blocking HTML elements. The move will potentially open up a whole new range of webpages that were previously invisible to the search engine.

    Deep Web

The deep Web (or Deepnet, invisible Web or hidden Web) refers to World Wide Web content that is not part of the surface Web indexed by search engines. It is estimated that the deep Web is several orders of magnitude larger than the surface Web.[1]

Deep Web resources may be classified into one or more of the following categories
    Dynamic content
    Unlinked content
    Private Web
    Contextual Web

    Emotiv's new brain-computer interface

Emotiv Systems recently unveiled a brain/computer interface system with a helmet and software applications. The Project Epoc system can move objects based on a gamer's thoughts, reflect facial expressions, and respond to the excitement or calm the gamer mentally exerts.

The EPOC detects brain activity noninvasively using electroencephalography (EEG), a measure of brain waves, via external sensors along the scalp that pick up the electrical bustle in various parts of the furrowed surface of the brain's cortex, a region that handles higher order thoughts.

Eye Phone; The mobile tourist guide

Future cell phones may act as a mobile tourist guide, and provide tourists with information on whatever they see while journeying. The target seems achievable with an eye-Phone technology that emerged as a regional winner in the European Satellite Navigation Competition, sponsored by ESA's Technology Transfer Programme, recently.

    Kristen Byrnes

Kristen Byrnes is skeptical that humans are causing climate change, and has posted her views on the Web.

Morning Edition, April 15, 2008 · If you're a scientist trying to convince people they are making the world warmer, Kristen Byrnes is your worst nightmare. She's articulate, intelligent, she has a Web site, and one day her people will be running the world. Her people, meaning 16-year-olds.

Kristen's Web site, "Ponder the Maunder," has made her a celebrity among climate skeptics. After she posted a critique of Al Gore's movie An Inconvenient Truth, her Web site got so many hits the family's internet service provider sent them a warning.

    The PS10 Solar Power Tower

One of oldest forms of energy used by humans -- sunlight concentrated by mirrors -- is poised to make an astonishing comeback. An example is the "Solar Tower" Planta Solar 10 (PS10 ), a solar power plant located in Sanlucar la Mayor, Spain.

    Brain Scans Reveal Brain Mysteries

Recent fMRI studies have enabled scientists to expand the intricate cartography that represents the mind at work, revealing not only everything from when you tell a lie, to how you fall in love, but even that your brain makes decisions long before you knew about it.

Your brain may trigger your decisions before you make them

These experiments show that the brain makes decisions prior to you being aware you made a decision. This is something to mull over a while, and is a little unsettling. Basically, this could indicate that the concept that your behavior is based on your active decision-making is in incorrect. Your brain may decide your behavior, and your active decision-making is an illusion of your brain.

"Your decisions are strongly prepared by brain activity. By the time consciousness kicks in, most of the work has already been done," said study co-author John-Dylan Haynes, a Max Planck Institute neuroscientist.
