Ubuntu MID -- An Open Source iPhone Competitor


Canonical Ltd. just launched a full "developers release" of Ubuntu 8.04 for MIDs (mobile Internet devices), providing the full Internet and lots more: Web 2.0 experience, Web browsing, email, media, camera, VoIP, instant messaging, GPS, blogging, digital TV, games, contacts, dates/calendar, simple software updates...
The Ubuntu MID Edition is based in part on technology from the Moblin community, which has developed a Linux kernel, UI framework, browser, multimedia framework, and embedded Linux image creation tools designed for MIDs and other mobile devices.

Abilene Christian University has decided to give all 2008 incoming students an iPhone to receive homework alerts, answer in-class surveys and quizzes, get directions to their professors' offices, and check their meal and account balances - among more than 15 other useful web applications already developed.

An Italian architect has unveiled plans to create a 'Dynamic Tower' - the world's first revolving skyscraper. Each floor rotates independently at different speeds, resulting in a unique and ever evolving shape. The tower is environmentally friendly, with the ability to generate electricity for itself as well as other buildings nearby.
